Read, play & discover togetherBible activities for toddlers
A Bible story can be the start of a small adventure. Read a little, let your child try something, and talk about what you notice together. Choose one activity below; you do not need to finish them all.
1. Explore light and shadows
Begin with a simple retelling of Genesis 1:1–5: God made light, and He saw that it was good. Then try a flashlight game in a comfortably dim room with a grown-up nearby.
- Shine a flashlight on a wall, away from anyone’s eyes.
- Move your hand in front of the beam and notice the shadow.
- Move your hand closer to the light, then farther away. Ask, “What happened to our shadow?”
- Let your child choose a familiar object for you to light up. Ask, “What can we see now?”
The flashlight is a way to explore light after the story; it is not part of the Bible account. Keep the focus on noticing and wondering, rather than expecting a correct answer.
2. Take a thankful discovery walk
Walk around your home or outside together. Invite your child to notice a leaf, the sky, a bird, or another part of God’s creation. They can point, name it, or describe its color. Offer a short response: “Thank You, God, for the trees.”
For a child who wants a challenge, find two different leaves and compare them. Which is bigger? What feels different? Looking closely is the activity; you do not need to collect anything.
3. Count what your child discovers
Choose a few large, familiar objects or pictures. Touch each one as you count together, then ask your child to bring you one. If counting a small group feels comfortable, try a slightly larger group next time. Follow what your child is ready to explore instead of racing to a target number.
4. End with a little prayer
You can say, “Dear God, thank You for our world and for this time together. Help us notice Your goodness. Amen.” Your child can join with a word, a gesture, or simply by listening. An original family prayer does not have to be long.
